Saving Money on Electricity Today

There are many ways to save on electricity today, not the least of which is choosing the provider who offers you the best rates with the terms you can most benefit from. Once you've done that, there are a number of ways you can reduce your electricity bill, from turning off lights and appliances when you don't need them to using electricity during off peak periods. Here are a few useful suggestions:

Buy Energy-Efficient Appliances

Energy-efficient appliances, such as GE Energy Star products, are available in hundreds of different models, from refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines to water heaters, air conditioners, air purifiers and vent hoods. How much can you save? Consider this: just replacing a pre-1994 washing machine with an Energy Star version alone can save you as much as $110 a year on your electric bill. Think of the potential for the rest of your appliances! You'll not only realize savings on your electric bill, but most can get your rebates, tax credits or sales tax exemptions so you'll start saving right off the bat. And energy-efficient appliances use less water as well as less electricity today, so you'll be saving on your water bill as well.

Clean or Replace Air Filters

Whether it's on your air conditioning unit, forced air heating or both, dirty filters restrict airflow, making your heating and cooling systems less efficient and requiring more power to heat and cool your home. Keep your filters clean, and you'll clean up on the savings.

Get Unplugged

Many or most appliances actually draw energy even when they're not in use. Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or try plugging multiple appliances into a power strip so that you can cut the power to all of them with the simple flip of a switch.

Wash in Cold Water

It's the 21st century - we don't need to boil our clothes anymore! Washing your laundry in cold water not only saves electricity required to heat the water, but it's kinder to your clothes, and will save you money on less frequent clothing purchases. With today's advanced detergent cleaning power, clothes come out just as clean in cold water.

Shed a New Light on Savings

Replace old light bulbs with new compact fluorescent light bulbs and you'll not only save money on your electricity today, but the bulbs will last you longer as well. Keep your eyes open for community programs that will trade you brand new CFL bulbs for your old ones and you'll save even more.
